Lyrics - Old Black

old black mama in my head
i remember every word she ever said
she sang in the choir that the preacher lead
she saved me from the grave when i was dead

when she spoke she took her time
we'd share a jar of muskidine
sometimes the words she said would rhyme
of the days when she was nine

she would hold me close when i would cry and comfort me
smelled the wiskey and cigars every time she breathed
but to me it was a sense that told me i was real
saved me from my questions brought me to reality

old black mama in my head
i remember every word she ever said
she sang in the choir that the preacher lead
she saved me from the grave when i was dead

when she spoke she took her time
we'd share a jar of muskidine
sometimes the words she said would rhyme
of the days when she was nine

i have dreamed of mystics and i've dreamed of the deceased
dreamed of unseen spirits and bovine halfling beasts
all would sing and dance for my attention and compete
but only one would stand between myself and my defeat

ch

when she needed water for tomatoes she would boil
we'de go to the backyard through a gate that needed oil
pull the rusty handle and i never fathomed how
on the first or second pull cold water tumbled out
